This project has been on going for a couple of years… and the world is getting closer to achieving that aim.
What aim? To bring the cost of laptop down to US$100 each so that third world countries can afford to provide each child with a laptop.
The cost of production is now US$150 per laptop. (Of course Windows won’t be running in this piece of hardware!)
Meanwhile, Mr Softy is starting to freak out. Imagine kids growing up using Windowless OS. In one generation, their market dominance could effectively be wiped out.
So… introducing… the pasar malam Windows @ US$3 a piece! For a limited time, coming to a third world country near you!
Their aim is to double the number of PC users globally!
Sounds like good news for the world? Well, think again! What is the lifespan of such a product? 5 years max? These things don’t look lasting in the first place…
So where do these products go to after they die? Will the same company that produce these equipment collect them back for recycling? Nah! Too expensive, hence unlikely.
Here’s where it will all go to… the friendly neighbourhood junk yard in the third world country. Here, it will spend the rest of eternity… poisoning the soil and making life harder for the next generation.
Darn bloody big businesses! Once again, short-term financial gains have triumphed over the long-term sustainability of our little Oasis in Space!
Gook Luck, people of the Next Generation. Good Luck.
